Keepers of the Last Lens

The Keepers of the Last Lens were the astronomers and custodians of the Observatory of Ilyr. Their surviving records span multiple black-star cycles and distinguish measured celestial recurrence from later religious or political interpretations. By the party’s arrival the order no longer operates as a normal living institution; Ilyra’s preserved consciousness and the observatory’s archives are the principal surviving voices of its work.

Historically, observe and preserve evidence of the recurring black-star cycle and maintain knowledge of earlier defensive responses. The surviving Ilyr archive now serves that purpose without an active field organization.

The Keepers provide the independent evidence that changes the campaign’s central question. Before Ilyr, the black star could still be dismissed as Eclipse doctrine or suppressed prophecy. Their measurements establish that the phenomenon is real and recurring while refusing to endorse Caelum’s specific solution. The Keepers also reveal that earlier civilizations constructed multiple defenses, preventing the Crown-versus-twilight debate from becoming a false choice between the only two possibilities.
