The party returned to a Dawnwatch still repairing damage from the coup and siege. Queen Maelin received the three Dawnshards, Selvara’s charts, and the account from Ilyr and Solspire in a closed meeting with Voss, Ysabet, and Marshal Iren. The discussion did not produce agreement. Maelin believed the restored Crown might provide information or power the realm could not afford to leave unused. Corin argued that restoration itself was part of Caelum’s warning and should not be treated as harmless simply because he opposed the man making the warning. Nyra emphasized that Ilyra had described multiple ancient defenses, meaning neither royal sibling possessed the complete historical picture.
The immediate pressure was Caelum’s army moving west. Scouts placed Eclipse banners several days from the capital. Rather than wait for another siege while holding three separate relics, the party chose to attempt restoration under controlled conditions at the Forge of Morning. Ysabet located the Forge through Seraphine’s private architectural records. It lay beneath Highcourt but was separate from the Sun Gate network Valec had used.
The Forge accepted Ember, Tide, and Radiant but did not join them. An inscription repeated the condition recorded at Ilyr: restoration required chosen loss. Corin asked Aster one final time whether he wanted the party to continue searching for another method. Aster answered that the choice had become his precisely because he could still refuse it. He named the memory he would surrender: the last peaceful day he had spent with his father before taking his knightly oath.
The ritual did not erase Aster’s knowledge that the day existed. Instead, when the shards joined, the lived details disappeared. He remembered where they had been and knew his father had spoken to him, but could no longer hear the voice or reconstruct his father’s face within that memory. Corin confirmed that ordinary restoration magic could find no injury to repair. The loss was not damage in the usual sense; the memory had become the price Seraphine designed.
The Crown of the First Dawn reformed above the Forge but did not settle onto Aster or recognize Maelin as its bearer. Light filled the chamber and drew everyone present into the same vision. They saw a black star moving through the outer dark toward Aurelis. Across the world, ancient structures awakened one after another in response. Some resembled Ilyr, while others were unfamiliar. The Crown itself then shone like a signal fire. Nyra saw the Veiled Flame sigil threaded through several of the responding structures.
The vision confirmed important facts without resolving their meaning. The black star was approaching. Ancient systems across Aurelis were connected to its approach. The Crown responded strongly enough to resemble a beacon. None of that established whether the response attracted the star, warned of it, communicated with other defenses, or prepared to oppose it. Caelum’s central fear therefore gained evidence while his proposed solution remained unproven.
Aster struggled with the immediate reality of his sacrifice after the vision ended. He could describe what he had chosen to lose but could no longer summon the emotional details that had made the memory precious. Mira remained with him while Corin objected to anyone calling the ritual a clean success. Tomas focused on what the vision meant politically: if Maelin announced only that the Crown had been restored, the court might assume the crisis was solved; if Caelum learned it had acted like a beacon, he would treat the result as vindication.
Before the group settled on what to disclose, a scout reported Eclipse banners on the eastern road. Caelum’s forces stopped outside immediate striking distance. A messenger entered under truce carrying no demand for surrender. Prince Caelum requested parley with Queen Maelin and specifically asked that the five who restored the Crown be present.
The session ended without another battle. The objective that had driven the campaign since Saint Orien was complete, but completion made the larger problem harder. The Crown existed again, Aster had paid an irreversible personal cost, Nyra’s lineage was now visibly connected to older defenses, and the party held evidence capable of challenging both Maelin’s confidence and Caelum’s certainty. Their next task was not to find another shard. It was to decide what truth Aurelis could safely act upon before the black star arrived.
