The party left Dawnwatch before repairs were complete because Nyra believed Selvara’s chart pointed toward the Observatory of Ilyr. Voss remained behind to rebuild the Guard, and Maelin authorized the expedition on the condition that the party send evidence back rather than disappear into another sealed ruin. At the edge of the Glass Wastes they hired Sera Dain, a caravan guide who refused to travel by the straight lines shown on royal maps.
Sera explained that the Wastes changed with heat and light. Entire roads could be invisible at noon and obvious near sunset, while glass storms turned exposed ridges into fields of cutting debris. The party passed structures fused into the desert itself, including the upper stories of a tower whose lower floors remained beneath black glass. Corin noted that the destruction resembled neither ordinary fire nor the cold burns seen near Brighthollow. Sera knew local stories describing the Wastes as the scar of a fallen star, but she treated them as tradition rather than history.
At Ilyr, Nyra used Selvara’s chart to align surviving lenses with markings preserved in the observatory floor. The alignment awakened Ilyra of the Last Lens, a magical consciousness stored in the instruments rather than a living person. Ilyra recognized the black-star pattern and confirmed that it had appeared in older observations. She could not say whether it was literally the same object returning or part of a repeating celestial phenomenon, but its approach was not invented by the Eclipse Court.
The party asked whether the Crown had stopped the previous event. Ilyra answered that earlier civilizations built several responses across Aurelis. Some were observatories, some were structures whose functions had been lost, and the Crown belonged to a later strategy. That distinction mattered. Caelum’s belief that everything depended on solar magic was an interpretation, not the only surviving historical model. Nyra copied the locations Ilyra could still identify, though several coordinates no longer matched modern maps.
Seraphine’s final testimony had also been stored at Ilyr. In it, the queen explained the condition for rejoining the Dawnshards. The Forge of Morning would accept the fragments only when a willing bearer surrendered a cherished memory permanently. The price was not fuel in a conventional sense. Seraphine intended it as a safeguard: anyone restoring the Crown would have to experience power as irreversible loss before gaining access to it.
Aster volunteered before the group finished debating alternatives. Corin objected that willingness did not make the requirement moral and argued they should search for another method. Aster did not insist on proceeding immediately; he stated only that if the price proved unavoidable, he would pay it rather than ask another party member to do so. Mira supported delaying the actual sacrifice until all three shards were recovered.
Tomas searched an abandoned Eclipse camp outside the observatory and found orders referring repeatedly to the Regent. The title appeared above both Valec and Selvara in the command structure, confirming someone else led the Court. Tracks and discarded supplies continued toward Solspire, a buried city Sera knew only from caravan stories.
The party left Ilyr with the black star established as a real campaign threat, evidence that multiple ancient defenses once existed, and the knowledge that restoring the Crown would permanently alter whoever completed the ritual. They followed Selvara toward Solspire carrying two Dawnshards and no agreement that restoration was necessarily the right answer.
