The party reached Lake Auriel using the waterproof map recovered at Highcourt. The marked shoreline ruin appeared empty until the Ember Shard warmed near a submerged stair. Tomas used Caldus’s sun-key on a mechanism below the waterline, allowing the stair to rise long enough for the party to descend before the lake closed above them. The sanctuary beneath was intact, dry, and filled with shallow channels of silver water that reflected memories rather than the people standing over them.
Corin recognized devotional language in the entry chamber but not the theology. Visitors were instructed to contribute remembrance before asking the sanctuary to reveal anything. The party initially treated the wording as metaphor until Aster touched the water and saw a childhood memory appear on its surface. Nyra determined that the magic did not merely display thoughts; it could retain them independently of the person who offered them.
Each member contributed a memory to open the inner chamber. The sanctuary did not erase those memories, but copies remained visible in the silver channels after the party moved on. Corin was disturbed by the idea that identity could be stored as an object. Mira noted signs that other visitors had reached the outer sanctuary recently, including disturbed sediment and cut rope, but the deeper wards appeared untouched.
In the central chamber, the party encountered the preserved testimony of the sanctuary’s last keeper. Through the memory-water, Corin experienced the keeper’s explanation of the Crown. It did not make a bearer wise, loyal, or benevolent. It magnified purpose. A ruler acting from courage could inspire extraordinary unity; a ruler acting from fear could turn that same power toward catastrophic control. Seraphine’s decision to divide it therefore reflected distrust of certainty as much as fear of the black star.
The Tide Shard rested inside a basin that opened only after all five memories had been offered. When Nyra lifted it, the Ember Shard responded but the fragments did not join. The party now held two pieces and enough information to question whether restoration was automatically desirable. Corin argued they should learn the full cost and function before assembling anything. Aster agreed to carry the shards separately.
Magister Selvara Kain confronted them during the ascent. She identified herself as a servant of the Eclipse Court but treated Valec with visible contempt, calling him useful to a problem larger than politics. Selvara did not try to convince the party that the black star was imaginary; she argued the opposite. According to her, Seraphine broke the Crown because concentrated solar power would attract or feed what was coming. She warned that putting the shards together would make Aurelis visible again. Nyra demanded evidence, but Selvara offered only the same historical pattern the party was already uncovering.
The confrontation ended without Selvara taking either shard. She withdrew after triggering part of the sanctuary’s defensive waterworks, forcing the party to choose escape over pursuit. Back on the shore, the heroes could not determine whether her warning was true, manipulation, or a mixture of both. They returned toward Dawnwatch with the Tide Shard, a clearer understanding of the Crown’s danger, and the first named Eclipse operative who appeared to know more than Chancellor Valec.
