Prince Caelum Auriel

Caelum Auriel is Queen Maelin’s missing brother and the Eclipse Regent. He discovered suppressed astronomical evidence concerning the black star and concluded that concentrated solar magic could attract or feed the approaching threat. After the government rejected action based on incomplete evidence, he disappeared and built the Eclipse Court. Under his leadership the Court funded covert research, intimidated witnesses, infiltrated the Guard, supported Valec’s coup, and pursued the Dawnshards. His stated strategy is to impose prolonged twilight across Aurelis to reduce the solar power he believes endangers the realm.

Caelum is the central antagonist without being the source of an invented danger. Ilyr and the restored Crown independently confirm the black star, so defeating him cannot solve the larger crisis. His role forces the party to separate evidence from interpretation and necessity from justification. The Court’s crimes and Caelum’s willingness to transform the realm without consent are established; whether part of his technical conclusion is necessary remains unresolved. His request for parley shifts the conflict from identifying the enemy to deciding what can safely be learned from him.
