Captain Elian Voss
Guard Commander
Who They Are
Elian Voss is the veteran commander of the Dawnwatch Guard and the first official to treat Caldus’s murder as evidence of institutional compromise. Practical and protective of his people, he recruits the party because they stand outside reporting channels he no longer trusts. He is gravely wounded holding the council doors during Valec’s coup, survives through Corin’s intervention, and returns in a limited command role during the siege. He now leads the rebuilding of a Guard whose uniforms and orders can no longer be trusted automatically.
Role in the Story
Voss anchors the party to Dawnwatch without making them servants of the palace. His distrust creates the space for the investigation, while his wounding makes the Guard’s corruption personal. After Valec’s capture, Voss must separate deliberate conspirators from officers who followed compromised orders. He provides a practical counterweight to Maelin and Caelum’s realm-scale arguments: whatever happens with the black star, ordinary citizens still need institutions they can trust.
