Tomas survived Lowmarket by learning that information is leverage and that the right lie can protect people more effectively than an honest warning delivered too late. Those instincts made him indispensable to the party. He traced the archive escape, infiltrated Valec’s salon, decoded Eclipse finances, and turned the coup’s own signal network against its organizers. Each success also exposed an uncomfortable resemblance between his methods and those of the people he condemns. Valec concealed truth because he believed ordinary institutions were too weak to survive crisis; Caelum withholds information because he believes public knowledge would produce panic. Tomas has often made smaller versions of the same choice for better reasons. He now holds secrets capable of exposing remaining traitors, destabilizing Maelin’s damaged court, or destroying a chance at parley with Caelum. His Chronicle asks when useful deception stops protecting people and becomes control, especially when Tomas is the person deciding who deserves the truth.

The black-star crisis has given Tomas information capable of changing governments, armies, and public behavior. Caelum justifies secrecy as protection against panic, while Maelin must decide what a damaged court can safely disclose. Tomas recognizes the logic because he has used smaller versions of it throughout the campaign. His current story is no longer whether he can keep a secret; it is whether anyone, including himself, should be trusted to decide which truths other people are allowed to know.
