Duty Beyond the Crown

Aster began as a knight who assumed loyalty to the Crown and protection of Aurelis were the same obligation. Caldus’s murder and the archive attack showed him institutions could be compromised without making the people inside them disposable.

He repeatedly chose lives over tactical advantage: rescuing clerks during the archive fire, protecting Maelin without treating her authority as infallible, and abandoning pursuit of Valec to save civilians during the coup. By the end of the siege, Aster’s oath had changed from obedience to a harder principle—protect the realm even when its institutions fail.
